Unrest Stalls Nepal Air Cargo
In Nepal where discovery and the beauty of the Himalayas can be stunning, a nationwide strike called by seven political parties of the country against the king's direct rule (and autocratic rules) continues for the past 18 days, “impacting all export and import cargo,” according to Sundar Dahal, CEO Starlight Express P. Ltd.

Air Cargo Vital In California AgriExports
Companies that may be searching for new markets might begin with reading an excellent study created by the Center For Agricultural Business at California State University at Fresno.
The 200 plus page document makes a strong case and allows both air cargo shippers and planners to get a handle on both the current market and what lies ahead.

 Airlines Gain Despite Fuel Spike
Just when it appeared that there was some easing of the financial pressures on the airlines that lost more than US$40 billion in the last five years and were expected to cut their losses to US$2 billion this year, oil prices now running close to US$70 per barrel cast these projections in doubt.
On the plus side is the fact that airlines and Southwest Airlines in particular, have been able to keep pace with fuel by raising fares without much resistance from passengers, especially in the USA.

What Slows India All-Cargo?
BAE is converting ATP Freighters that will be used by First Flight to start its own Indian domestic freighter operations. The three aircraft (msn 2039, 2051 and 2054) will be delivered during the second quarter of 2006 and will be configured as E-Class bulk freighters similar to the ATP freighter delivered to West Air Sweden, the company that pioneered this excellent and versatile air cargo lifter.

                 Giovanni Wings A Humdinger
Giovanni Bisignani, Director General and CEO, IATA delivered a speech at The Wings Club in New York yesterday.
When you meet the DG you notice right away that he is not a particularly big guy.
Mr. Bisignani is compact with a wiry build and while he speaks he seems to move around a lot.
He is always thinking as he talks and it is obvious he means what he says.
No doubt Giovanni Bisignani faces big challenges just as commercial aviation is about to emerge into some kind of profit sunshine in 2007, after one more year of predicted losses in 2006.
The trick will be for this one-time Alitalia CEO who now heads up the biggest commercial aviation organization in the world to somehow address a myriad of direct problems that confront the 265 worldwide members of IATA. More Click Here.

Light And Shadow At Lufthansa Cargo
Big Ship-Small Wheel…As Jean Peter Jansen steps down as top executive at Lufthansa Cargo hehands symbolic wheel to interim new chief, Stefan Lauer.
Amidst ongoing investigation into airline security and fuel surcharge price fixing, the departure of Jansen raised eyebrows worldwide just as Lufthansa had said it would cooperate with EU and USA investigators.
But the deal here say Lufthansa insiders is that Jean Peter is really not well.
Although his ailment is not disclosed, Lufthansa insiders say, he will be remembered as a well liked, unassuming “good-guy” chief executive.
Stefan Lauer assumes command after a better than expected financial report for cargo last week.
Perhaps as indication of the depth of management choices at Lufthansa, Herr Lauer’s appointment is temporary, lasting only until a new chief for cargo is named this fall. More Click Here.

Lufthansa Cargo Trade Lanes Management Build Better Routes

Except for a military operation where cost/revenue considerations are nil, logistics has always had to wrestle with the same problem: the age-old imbalance in flow of goods.
Evening out traffic flows in cargo has been a challenge since Marco Polo planned his roundtrips over water, and during the heyday of the old Silk Road or even since the time of sailing ships, and tramp steamers that followed.
Volatility of modern global trade patterns is fascinating. Production of consumer goods can move from Taiwan to Mainland China or Korea in the course of a few months.
A new law in Brazil stipulating for example, consumption, forces all countries along the line doing business in that particular market to change procedures More Click Here.

Adding Up Cargo Counts

When “cargo counts” marks its second year as a business unit of Lufthansa Cargo sometime this coming May 2006, Georg Midunsky, the managing director will most probably also set some kind of record for almost non-stop travel to all four corners of the world since start-up.
cargo counts (the name is presented in lower case) currently serves half a dozen carriers and with Georg out there on the prowl, the bet is more will be added soon.
     The formula is familiar
