Logitrans Istanbul Like Silk For Logistics

This week Messe München, the folks that bring you Air Cargo Europe every other year, once again organize Logitrans International Transport Logistics Exhibition in Istanbul in conjunction with EKO Fair Limited, Munich.
Held just off the main runways of Istanbul Ataturk International Airportinside Hall 9 & 10 of the Istanbul Expo Center, the event runs November 15-17 with the trade show floors open 11:00-17:00 daily.

The New Silk Road

China’s “One Belt – One Road” strategy will play a major role in the 2017 Logitrans conference program, event organizers report.
The November 15 program will include discussion between Eurasian logistics professionals who will exchange first-hand experiences related to the New Silk Road and share their opinion on how the project does influence the local markets. Hereby, the panelists literally cover almost every aspect of the Silk Road: they represent companies from China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, and Europe that are operating on rails tracks as well as on waterways.

UTIKAD Welcome

Turgut Erkeskin, (pictured here with publisher Geoffrey Arend) President of the Association of International Forwarding & Logistics Service Providers (UTIKAD) in Turkey said:
“This event is great as we get to see both our customers and service partners together networking in one place.
“Turkey is Europe’s seventh largest economy, so this week Istanbul business goes face to face at Logitrans with meetings that can drive our continued expansion on the international business front.
“We welcome the opportunity to better understand the opportunities that our transportation industry offers,” Turgut said.
Hasan Hatipoglu       Hasan Hatipoglu, General Manager of Lufthansa Cargo in Turkey added, “Every year we are very happy with the quantity and quality of the participants and the chance to meet with air cargo industry representatives.”
On Day 2 Mr. Hatipoglu will be moderating a session titled "Perilog On Air Freight." Perishable Logistics, or PeriLog, gets the once over at Logitrans Istanbul discussing various aspects of transporting and storing perishables as well as cool chain logistics.

Digital Highlights

Day Two at Logitrans Istanbul will also delve into the role of digitization and its impact along the aforementioned New Silk Road.
“The entire conference program is free of charge for all Logitrans visitors and exhibitors,” the organizers said.
“This year as in the past we expect more that 180 exhibitors from 28 countries and overall throughput at the event to top more that 13,000 visitors.
There’s still time to climb onboard.

45 Alive EMO Trans USA

Tilo Weger, Marco Rohrer adn Uwe Kaeding    “In October 1972, we founded EMO Trans USA,” Chairman Jo Frigger recalled recently.
“Looking back (and ahead), our founding in America 45 years ago has turned out to be a fairly sensible decision,” he smiled.
“Deepest thanks to our customers and of course to our employees for the continued hard work and dedication that has contributed to EMO Trans’ success,” Jo said.
“Moving forward, we are planning to add some additional offices to our organization.
“The additional openings will be announced shortly.
Tom Bayes       “Marco Rohrer (EMO Trans President) and Tom Bayes (EMO Trans Director of Route Development and Asia Development) have just returned from Asia, so stay tuned,” Jo proclaimed.

Partner of the Year

“Lufthansa honored EMO Trans as their ‘Business Partner of the Year.’
“We are very proud of this and thank Lufthansa for the recognition, with special thanks to our air operation teams, especially Uwe Kaeding and Tilo Weger, for this achievement,” Mr. Frigger said.

Looking Ahead

“We are a privately held, healthy company, and during the last 45 years, our philosophy remains unchanged.
“EMO Trans will continue our path of organic growth, anchored in our strong, well educated, top-of-the-line workforce, our solid financial position, and again excellent results for 2017 to-date.
“From Australia to Asia, from Europe to Latin and North America, EMO Trans comprises a large number of talented employees who are mentored and ready to step up and take on additional responsibilities.”

Netting The World

Tom Harlin      “EMO Trans’ investments in IT projects will increase and be ongoing,” Mr. Frigger said.
“In the administration and accounting area, Tom Harlin, Laura Mills, and the agents department in conjunction with our worldwide team are in the process of implementing a global ‘netting system.’
“Netting,” Jo explains, “involves monthly settlements between the various global EMO offices, which will now be conducted through a central system in Freeport, Long Island, New York, (EMO Trans headquarters) the location where receivables and payables for all offices are consolidated.”
“Our move toward centralization is win-win and includes savings in banking and administration.
“We will also benefit by eliminating some foreign exchange risk for our international transactions, while at the same time streamlining our entire system.”

About Autumn

Despite the years and challenges of building not only a successful but greatly admired global transportation resource, Jo Frigger still finds time to stop and smell the flowers.
“I have always found the autumn season and the burst of colorful foliage in the northern U.S. invigorating.
“It’s an ideal time to reflect on past achievements or mistakes, inspiring us to plan for the next year with either needed corrections or new opportunities.
“The month has always been a lucky one for me.
“I was born in October, which was personally a relatively fortunate event.
“My mother explained to me that fall was the best season of the year with fresh berries, apples, and new mushrooms available, along with the colorful trees.”

Miami Rhapsody

“As air cargo gathered in Miami at Air Cargo Americas,” Jo said, “it is worthwhile mentioning that the great Florida delicacy stone crabs (delicious) are now in season and have been on sale everywhere, including Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant (no relation) since October 16,” Jo declared.

The Best Is Yet To Come

“EMO Trans has been implementing customized global logistics solutions across the U.S. for 45 years, and we still believe we are building an enterprise where the best is yet to come.
“With 250 offices in 120 countries, our business partners can access every corner of the globe right from their front door.
“Nimble yet stable, we’re proud to deliver the personalized service of a privately-held company with the robust infrastructure of a multi- national leader.”
“Here in America or anywhere else in the world of EMO Trans, our business partners can trust the expertise, ingenuity, and commitment of the EMO Trans team for creative, customized logistics to solve the most complex cargo challenges,” Jo Frigger concluded.

Atlanta Brokers Thanksgiving Friday

For the fifteenth year, on Friday, November 17, in Atlanta, Georgia, a grand airport tradition occurs as Atlanta Customs Brokers & Freight Forwarders throw open their doors for a couple of hours starting at high noon to share the love. It’s an open house where everybody is invited for a free, old-fashioned turkey dinner.
This annual party reaches out far and wide to host several hundred people to a homemade turkey dinner with all the trimmings, as the United States looks forward to celebrating the wonderful American holiday Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is a great day in the United States —the only thing that matters is family and the meal.
No gifts or presents needed; just show up and eat.
Families openly invite friends and other guests, many believing that no one should dine alone on Thanksgiving.
Perhaps the best thing is that, carrying forward a tradition begun by the Pilgrims who landed on these shores in 1620, you can greet any American with the words “Happy Thanksgiving” and not fear offending anyone, much less evoking the common holiday retort, “that is not my holiday!”
In this land made up of so many different people from all over the world, Thanksgiving represents a day that everybody can celebrate simply, as Americans.
For many years in Atlanta, Georgia, ACB founder and military veteran Harold Hagans (an absolute stalwart of the air cargo community for decades, now happily retired) continued this annual holiday party for his friends and colleagues at the airport.
As a true Southern Gentleman, Harold knew all about hosting and preparing a meal out of turkey. But even more, Harold cherished the values of community spirit and sharing, and folks simply trying to good for one another.
Happily, in 2017 his daughter Deborah, who today serves as President of Atlanta Customs Brokers, has taken the baton to continue the grand tradition.
One look at the happy group atop this story attests to the great spirit and joy of being in business at Atlanta Customs Brokers.

Fry Baby Fry

While nearly everybody else puts the bird into an oven, ACB digs back into the past and sets up a unique and imaginative deep-frying operation for turkey right inside the ATL air cargo facility.
“We love to do this, to show our appreciation and share our good fortune with others at Thanksgiving,” Deborah said.
“It’s a real open house and everyone should drop in, eat until your hands get tired, and have some fun.”

About Atlanta Customs Brokers

We asked Deborah how it happened that so many women work at ACB.
“We actually work very well together. We are like a family.
Adriana TruebaHope Chavez     “It has always been that way, even when Harold was here. Since he retired the only change is that I have added Freight Forwarding to the mix and we now move freight all over the world import and export for our customers.”
As for how Deborah came into the air freight industry, she laughs and says, “I was born into this business. Harold Hagans married my mother when I was 7 years old. I have twin daughters myself and hope to have them on board after their college is completed.
“At ACB we are actively involved in this community, following in Harold’s footsteps. We hold important positions in the Atlanta Air Cargo Association. Our Vice President Adriana Trueba (left) is the Chairwoman of the Board of the AACA and our Senior Import Specialist Hope Chavez (right) serves as President.

Time & Place

Deborah and her crew will be opening up the facilities at Atlanta Customs Brokers on November 17, from 12:00-14:00 hrs. Atlanta Customs Brokers & Freight Forwarders Tel: 404-762-0953.

newsletter graphicRE: Richard Malkin Was A Genius

Dear Geoffrey,

I know that you will miss Richard “Dick” Malkin as much as Phyllis, Ian, and myself.
He was a friend of nearly sixty years as well as a unique contributor to the rapid expansion of the Irish economy through his ideas for development of the Shannon Airport and surrounding region in conjunction with the world-renowned Brendan O’Regan, also no longer with us.
We will seriously miss a great personal friend.
It should never be forgotten that we awarded Dick Honorary Fellowship in our IIFA, the National Freight Forwarders Association of Ireland.
We will always remember our dear friend and colleague.

Best wishes from Ian and myself to you and your lovely wife.
Sean McCool

Sean McCool and Ian McCool

Dear hearts and gentle people, Sean McCool (Dublin, Ireland) and Richard go way back to the 1950s, when they met by chance in Shannon.
Now happily in his eighties, Sean, a true visionary and transportation pioneer, looks back at a lifetime of service to Ireland and air cargo. He was the recipient of the “Transport Leader Award” at the prestigious Irish Logistics & Transport Awards - 2017 (held March 30, 2017), in Dublin.

Always,
Geoffrey
