Giving Thanks 2024 |
The Arend family spent many of our Thanksgivings, the great, truly original All-American holiday celebrated across this great country this Thursday, in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts. We would gather together at our family home in Great Barrington and, later in our place nearby on top of a small mountain in Monterey, MA on Lake Buel. This year like many others, going home and gathering together is like taking a trip down memory lane. Welcome to 1989. Where are they now? Everyone here is now older, or gone from this dimension, but lovingly and fondly remembered. In terms of timeframe, we were in residence in The Berkshires of Massachusetts from the 1960s until 2000. Life in The Berkshires was captured for the world beginning in the 1940s by artist Norman Rockwell who painted the lives of people and places for a popular weekly magazine called The Saturday Evening Post, patterned on a publication by American Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, Many people from New York and New Jersey own vacation homes in the Berkshires. In Manhattan, New York City it is said that whilst East Siders getaway to The Hamptons of Long Island, West Siders go to the Berkshires. Over at Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony the great conductors were in residence, including the late Leonard Bernstein who held sway all summer long. During high season, especially in late August, the Shed where the orchestra rehearsed was filled with musicians whilst the forest surrounding us all was filled with crickets. Often then insects would join in the festival with their buzzing sound riding up and down on the wind, as the music played on. Later Seijii Ozawa made the great outdoor concert stage his summer address. Today the Concert Hall at Tanglewood is dedicated to the great Japanese conductor. Our kids went to summer camp over at Stockbridge Bowl during those golden days of Summer. On Saturdays we operated a hot dog wagon in front of our First Congregational Church in Great Barrington. The Massachusetts Congregationalists wrote the Bill of Rights after landing on Plymouth Rock in Eastern Massachusetts in 1620. Or did Plymouth Rock land on them? Thanksgiving is going away my favorite holiday. The reason is simple. All you gotta do is show up and eat. Enjoy the great Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. On TV everywhere! But no true American can look at you and say: “That’s not my holiday!” At times getting together with family is challenging, some rules of engagement may be necessary. But what a relief not to have to buy anything, do anything, or even say very much. Maybe pitch in and help. Pour a drink; build a fire, turn on the television or turn up the music. Hooray for the pumpkin pie! As we count our blessings, and kiss the past’s ass, we are thankful we live in America and think about our cherished family and friends everywhere. We wish you dear reader, peace and goodwill at this time. Happy Thanksgiving! Please click here. Geoffrey |
