Shanghai COVID-19 Shut Down
Shanghsai shutdown
In China as Shanghai is in its most extensive coronavirus lockdown in two years, mass testing is ongoing to control a growing outbreak as questions are raised about the economic toll of the nation’s “zero-COVID” strategy.
Shanghai, China’s financial capital and largest city with 26 million people, had managed its smaller previous outbreaks with limited lockdowns of housing compounds and workplaces where the virus was spreading.
But the citywide lockdown that is being conducted in two phases will be China’s most extensive since the shutdown of Wuhan City,, where the virus was first detected in late 2019. In early 2020 the city had confined its 11 million people to their homes for 76 days.   Millions more have been kept in lockdown since then.
Shanghai’s Pudong financial district and nearby areas were locked down last week from Monday to Friday as mass testing got underway. In the second phase of the lockdown, the vast downtown area west of the Huangpu River that divides the city started its own five-day lockdown Friday.
All residents are now being forced to shelter in place, and PVG Airport and the ocean port are closed at this time.
Here are some cargo operational impacts.
No cargo should be exported to PVG at this time. Booking options for future shipments are on hold.
Options to bypass the Shanghai ocean terminals for Ningbo sailings are currently not available due to drivers not being able to travel within districts.
China is looking at ocean feeder options to other ports, but options will be limited, if available at all.
Container trucking service/LTL service is very limited or not available at this time due to COVID travel restrictions.
