Alas Casualty Of War

Destroyed AN-225

Built by the Kyiv-based Antonov Company, the world's largest plane Antonov AN-225, destroyed by Russian forces during the invasion of Ukraine Feb 24th is pictured burnt after Russian shelling at Hostomel Airport Kyiv. The aircraft, named 'Mriya' meaning 'Dream', built in 1988 got caught with an engine off the aircraft, in a hangar and was a sitting duck. Mourning loss of the one and only AN-225, Ukraine officials vowed to rebuild the aircraft and send the bill to Russia. Mriya remains the heaviest aircraft ever built. Powered by six turbofan engines with a maximum payload weight of 250 tons, the aircraft was lifted by the largest wingspan of any airplane in operational service.
Meantime that knock at the door of Russian Federation carriers is the repo-man from Irish-based aircraft lessors and others to retrieve pax and cargo leased aircraft. Russia has about 900 aircraft with about 500 on lease. Russian carriers operating with what is left to where they still have someplace to fly, maybe domestically and to China, will not be junkets either, as maintenance and repairs conducted elsewhere, like in Germany for Aeroflot and others have been halted because of sanctions imposed due to the invasion of Ukraine.
