The
holiday season is filled with many traditions, but none
so universal as the adoption of a Christmas pet. It
saddens us to know there are so many animals in need
of a good home. This year, if you can't adopt an animal
in need, why not help those still waiting for a home?
The
Iqaluit Humane Society resides in the bucolic city of
Iqaluit, capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut.
In this isolated city of less than 7,000 residents,
the Iqaluit Humane Society stands as the only ‘no-kill’
shelter. With room for about 20 dogs, and a take-in
rate averaging 25 dogs per month, the Iqaluit Humane
Society quickly runs out of room, relying instead on
a partnership with Canadian North Airlines and the SPCA
of Western Quebec to fly animals to another shelter
in Quebec free of charge.
FlyingTypers
learned that as of January 11, 2016, Canadian North
Airlines will no longer be able to fly dogs out of the
shelter due to scheduling issues. Because the Iqaluit
Humane Society cannot afford to pay to fly animals out
of Iqaluit, they may have to forfeit their no-kill status
and begin euthanizing. As of December 23, a new, 2-year
partnership was forged with First Air to allow the Iqaluit
Humane Society to continue their dog program and fly
animals to Quebec and the other more remote communities
of Nunavut. Of course, when it comes to help you can
never have too much.
This
holiday season, you can contribute towards bettering
the lives of the animals at the Iqaluit Humane Society.

loving homes, and we salute First Air for stepping up
to keep our furry friends safe.
