United Airlines Cargo
and All Nippon Airways Cargo—Star Alliance partners—want
a “more efficient and comprehensive trans-Pacific air cargo business
network.”
So this week ANA filed an application with the MLIT
(Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism) for
antitrust immunity to do exactly that.
An historic first of its kind between the U.S. and
Asia, the UA Cargo and ANA trans-Pac joint venture “would generate
substantial service benefits for freight consumers.
“It would also enable United and ANA to compete
more effectively with other airlines that maintain a significant presence
in both markets,” ANA said.
The application looks like a slam-dunk.
ANA asked the same ministry for immunity with Star
partner Lufthansa Cargo in Spring 2014, and received an OK this past
September.
