How to Be an Antiracist |
Published in 2019, the book How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi is a necessary read as 2020 moves full steam ahead. The coming weeks are traditionally reserved for “summer reads,” but the current racial climate in the United States and the way many Americans view and treat Black Americans demands something heartier to digest than the standard light fare reserved for summer. Here is a thoughtful, learned, and compelling look at restructuring our current sensibilities and actions as doors begin to open after lockdown. This book is a reasoned guide for anyone concerned with dismantling racism, both personally and within structural institutions. “The only way to undo racism is to constantly identify it,” Ibram X. Kendi writes. Kendi contends that saying you are “not racist” or “color blind” sends the wrong message. There is no neutrality today; you are racist or antiracist, period. Likewise, saying you are colorblind indicates a failure to recognize racism, which freezes thinking into racial passivity. “We know how to be racist. “We know how to pretend not to be racist. “Now let’s know how to be antiracist.” How to Be an Antiracist is available to library patrons via e-book format here, but you can also consult this list to order from your local black-owned bookstore.
