NLB KC Grand Slam At 100 |
Big sports story this week happened 100 years ago when Negro Leagues Baseball was born in Kansas City on February 13, 1920. Andrew “Rube” Foster, (above) Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher (1981) and acknowledged ‘father of black baseball’ for his managerial and executive skill in forming the league, and other team owners met at what was once the Paseo YMCA at 18th and Vine in Kansas City. Foster showed up with a charter in hand and Negro Leagues Baseball was born. Today, the National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum stands just blocks from where the league was founded. In Kansas City, the centennial was celebrated at NLB as baseball luminaries of today from every strata of the sport, recalled the sportsmanship, excellence, perseverance, competition of some of the best baseball players who ever lived and made way for baseball, as we know it today. Celebrations will continue all year long. www.nlbm.com |
